Back to My Green (Single)

about

I wrote the song "Back to My Green" looking out our bedroom window at our back yard here in Hillsborough, NC. It was July. The air was thick. The tree frogs were deafening. I feel so comforted by lush green landscape and humid weather. The song and the album are about coming back to my true nature, growing into my true nature. It’s about human nature and fauna and flora. I can’t separate myself from the trees and the greenery without feeling lost somehow. The natural world is so mind-blowing, so precious. I always find beauty when I look at a natural green landscape. And then I am able to appreciate the beauty of life and feel the depth of my own humanity. Obviously it is more incumbent on us than ever to protect our beautiful planet.

When I went into the studio with this song, I was excited right away by my co-producer, Mark Simonsen's ideas. Things got tropical, 60's Brazil-esque. Thom Canova, our engineer happened to have some tree frog sounds on tape (go figure - engineers!). I was like, "yes! this is sweet and expansive and unique! Bring it!"

Hope you enjoy.

lyrics

Back To My Green

Hot afternoon
Tree frogs are revving
Revving it up for a symphony only they understand
What would I do
To be part of the green
Shimmy along to their rhythm

And to just be free
In my body
Free in my mind
Free from the world of want and worry that swallows our time
I could be free
Like the breeze in the pine
On a hot afternoon

When I recall
Places I been
Cities of steel and granite never let you in
Aw but back to my green
Her mystery
Pulling me in like a lover whispers

And I’m free
In my body
Free in my mind
Free from the fear of our own wonder that swallows our time
I could be free
Feel the heavens align
When I recall

Sayin’ I’m free
In my body
Free in my mind
Free to believe that love and beauty can win in our time
Sayin’ I’m free
Sayin’ I’m fine
When I follow her lead
Back to my green
